Why is this medication prescribed?
Triamterene is in a class of drugs called potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills). This medication is used to treat edema (fluid retention and excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various conditions, including liver and heart disease. It causes the kidneys to eliminate unneeded water and sodium from the body into the urine, but reduces the loss of potassium.
This medication can sometimes be prescribed for other uses, but it is strongly recommended that you ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
